Some of the most valuable opals are prized for their “play of color” which should show up as bright and vibrant rainbow hues.

However if you are not a fan of opals, try tourmaline which is the modern choice of birthstone. Tourmaline also has one of the widest ranges on the color spectrum of any gemstone.

Genuine tourmaline naturally displays pleochroism meaning that if you look at your gemstone from different angles you should be able to a slight difference in the color, depending on the viewing angle.

Tourmaline has been around for centuries and sometimes can be mistaken for rubies, emeralds or other precious gems because of the color.

A good example of this is the “Caesars Ruby Pendant” part of the Russian crown jewels, which is not a ruby at all, but rather a red (rubellite) tourmaline stone.

Tourmaline was not recognized by scientists as a distinct mineral species until the 1800’s. Prior to that there were quite a few cases of mistaken identity!
